Unul dintre castelele frumoase din judeţul Cluj, înconjurat de un parc de 11 hectare, este şi cel din Gilău, Wass-Banffy, dar care, din păcate, este închis publicului, cel puţin deocamdată. Cetatea, apoi castelul are o istorie bogată, chiar a fost distrus într-un incendiu, a trecut pe la mai mulţi proprietari, iar unul dintre ei se pare că a fost şi Mihai Viteazul. Istoricul clujean Vladimir Alexandru Bogosavlievici ne oferă câteva amănunte.

Mihai Viteazul, proprietar imobiliar: Castelul Wass-Banffy

„Suntem în faţa celebrului castel din Gilău. Puteţi remarca că este într-o plină renovare, lucrările se vor finaliza anul viitor.

Acest castel îşi are o poveste mai lungă. La început a fost o cetate, care avea rolul de a fi o cetate a unui episcop al Transilvaniei, Gheorghe Lepes. Pe urmă, un alt episcop al Transilvaniei, Ladislau Gereb, transformă această cetate cu rol de apărare într-un castel. Sunt diferenţe între un castel şi o cetate, în măsura în care castelul nu avea rol defensiv.

Ulterior, în această zonă, a stat şi văduva celebrului voievod şi principe, – şi chiar rege al Ungariei Ioan Zapolya – regina Isabella – care era poloneză, fiica lui Sigismund I al Poloniei – şi fiul său Ioan Sigismund. Ulterior, acest castel se pare că a fost şi proprietatea lui Mihai Viteazul, pentru că se spune că doamna Stanca, soţia sa, şi cei doi copii, Nicolae Pătraşcu şi fiica sa Florica, ar fi stat aici într-un domiciliu forţat, în debutul secolului al XVII-lea”, povesteşte istoricul clujean.

Castelul Wass-Banffy, interzis publicului

De-a lungul timpului, castelul a avut mai mulţi proprietari, iar acum, aflat în amenajare, aparţine unei firme.

„Ce se ştie, că în 1613, el devine proprietatea lui Rakoczi I, principele Transilvaniei, iar apoi ajunge în proprietatea celebrei familii Banffy, care, prin căsătorie cu reprezentanţi ai familiei Wass, i-au dat denumirea pe care o vedeţi aici, Wass-Banffy, iar numele de Barcsay este numele moştenitorului familiei Banffy, un profesor, care a trăit în Canada, poate că mai trăieşte, şi care a vândut acest spaţiu unei firme din Târgu Mureş. Deocamdată, castelul nu este accesibil, nu se poate vizita.

One of the beautiful castles in Cluj county, Wass-Banffy, surrounded by a 11-hectare park, is located in Gilău, but unfortunately, it is closed to the public, at least for now. The fortress – and later, the castle – has a rich history, it was destroyed in a fire, it had multiple owners and one of them seems to have been Michael the Brave. The historian from Cluj, Vladimir Alexandru Bogosavlievici sheds some light on the matter.

„We are in front of the famous castle in Gilău. You can notice that it is in a full renovation which will be completed next year.

This castle has a longer story. At first, it was a fortress which belonged to a transylvanian bishop, Gheorghe Lepes. Then, another bishop of Transylvania, Ladisau Gereb, turned the fortress with defence purposes into a castle. There are differences between a castle and a fortress, to the extent that the castle did not have such purposes.

Later, in this area, the widow of the famous voivode and prince, – and even King of Hungary – John Zapolya, Queen Isabella – the daughter of Sigismund I of Poland – and her son, John Sigismund, lived here. Then, this castle seems to have been the property of Michael the Brave, because it is said that Mrs. Stanca, his wife, and their two children, Nicolae Pătraşcu and Florica, would have stayed here in a house arrest, at the beginning of the 17th century”, the historian from Cluj says.

The Wass-Banffy Castle, closed to the public

Over time, the castle had several owners, and now, under development, belongs to a company.

“What is known is that in 1613 it became the property of Rakoczi I, the prince of Transylvania, and then became the property of the famous Banffy family who, by marrying representatives of the Wass family, gave it the name you see here, Wass-Banffy. The name Barcsay is the name of the heir of the Banffy family, a teacher who lived in Canada – who might still be alive – and who sold this space to a company from Târgu Mureş. For now, the castle cannot be visited.

We will see how the owner will surprise us, in a pleasant way, I hope”, Vladimir Alexandru Bogosavlievici adds.
